Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
